چکیده

Filaments which form either between or around active regions (ARs) are called intermediate filaments. In spite of various theoretical studies, the origin of the chirality of filaments is still uncovered. We investigated how intermediate filaments are related to their associated ARs, especially from the point of view of magnetic helicity and the orientation of polarity inversion lines (PILs). The chirality of filaments has been determined based on the orientations of barbs observed in BBSO full-disk Hα images taken during the rising phase of solar cycle 23. The sign of magnetic helicity of ARs has been determined using S/inverse–S shaped sigmoids from Yohkoh SXT images. As a result, we have found a good correlation between the chirality of filaments and the magnetic helicity sign of ARs. Among 45 filaments, 42 filaments have shown the same sign as helicity sign of nearby ARs. It has been also confirmed that the role of both the orientation and the relative direction of PILs to ARs in determining the chirality of filaments is not significant, against a theoretical prediction. These results suggest that the chirality of intermediate filaments may originate from magnetic helicity of their associated ARs. Modelling the Global Solar Corona II: Coronal Evolution and Filament Chirality Comparison

The hemispheric pattern of solar filaments is considered using newlydeveloped simulations of the real photospheric and 3D coronal magnetic fields over a 6-month period, on a global scale. The magnetic field direction in the simulation is compared directly with the chirality of observed filaments, at their observed locations. In our model the coronal field evolves through a continuous sequence o...

Evolution of helicity in NOAA 10923 over three consecutive solar rotations

We have studied the evolution of magnetic helicity and chirality in an active region over three consecutive solar rotations. The region when it first appeared was named NOAA10923 and in subsequent rotations it was numbered NOAA 10930, 10935 and 10941. We compare the chirality of these regions at photospheric, chromospheric and coronal heights. The observations used for photospheric and chromosp...

Modelling the Global Solar Corona: Filament Chirality Observations and Surface Simulations

The hemispheric pattern of solar filaments is considered in the context of the global magnetic field of the solar corona. In recent work Mackay and van Ballegooijen have shown how, for a pair of interacting magnetic bipoles, the observed chirality pattern could be explained by the dominant range of bipole tilt angles and helicity in each hemisphere. This study aims to test this earlier result t...

On the CME velocity distribution

Context. Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are often categorized into flare-associated and filament-associated types, which logically is incomplete since there are many CMEs of the intermediate type. Aims. With this new classification, this paper aims to reexamine whether flare-associated CMEs and filament eruption-associated CMEs have distinct velocity distributions and to investigate which factor...

Magnetic Helicity Generation by Solar Differential Rotation

Observations of sunspots, active regions, filaments, coronal arcades, and interplanetary magnetic clouds indicate that the Sun preferentially exhibits left-handed, negative-helicity features in its northern hemisphere, and their opposite counterparts in the south, independent of sunspot cycle. We investigate quantitatively the generation of magnetic helicity by solar differential rotation actin...
